(generally ages 8 - 12)
Once again emphasis is placed upon memory retention. The ability to perform alone or in a small group without watching others is key.
These
combination classes consist of stretching / warm up techniques, Tap,
Jazz and Ballet. Students are introduced to the techniques and steps
from all styles of dance and continue to develop their imagination
and musical awareness. Students are expected to use appropriate terminology
for all dance steps. As students complete each dance year, their placement
in the next class level is determined by their progress over the current
year and their having mastered the skills presented to them in the
current level.
|
PRETEEN / TEEN COMBINATION CLASSES: |
(generally ages 11 - 14)
These classes are among the last in the series before a student is considered for separate disciplines. These specially designed classes cater to the "tween" student with fun and energetic but age appropriate music/lyrics, costumes, and movements. We continue to incorporate stretching, warm-up technique, tap, jazz, and ballet. Focus is placed upon quick learning of a skill in combination with memory retention.

* BALLET IS REQUIRED IF A STUDENT IS ENROLLED IN JAZZ.
Jazz technique is designed for those students who have successfully
completed and mastered all elementary level classes and wish to broaden
their knowledge of and skill in jazz dance. These classes are ballet
based and students are REQUIRED to take an additional ballet
class during the week to reinforce proper body placement. All Jazz classes consist
of warm up, across the floor exercises and center work or combinations.
- Students focus upon understanding
the importance of proper Ballet
technique as a foundation for correct Jazz technique.
- Emphasis continues to be placed on proper body placement and proper
usage of the muscles. Students focus upon achieving maximum flexibility,
body isolations, turns, kicks and leaps.
- Lyrical techniques, which incorporate the grace of ballet with the
strength of jazz, are taught in class in addition to Modern technique
and musical theatre.
|
|
Each class
consists of a brief warm up prior to barre, barre exercises and center
work. Across the floor combinations are also presented.
Dress code for Ballet is STRICTLY enforced. Black leotards, pink tights,
pink split sole slippers and hair secured in a bun. Boys must wear
Black Sweats, solid white T-shirts, black socks and black slippers.
All classes are exposed to Classical Ballet as a serious and disciplined,
but very spiritual art form. Proper terminology and the background
of steps being presented are used in every class meeting. Emphasis is placed on
proper turn out, correct head
placement, correct arm placement and carriage and proper upper body
placement including the shoulders and ribs.
The history and evolution of Ballet as we know it today are discussed
in class along with books and videos of famous dancers, dance companies
and the great works of the past.

Tap technique is for those students who want
to learn more about the sounds, patterns and rhythms that make up
the Art of Tap Dance. Students must have completed / mastered all
skills in the basic levels before progressing through the different
levels of tap.
Tap Level 1
Level 1 is the gap between a beginner student and an intermediate student.
Presentation and accuracy in the work given is required more now than
in previous classes. Clarity, sound, rhythm and tempos are a few of
the basic principles of Tap that are focused upon in this class.
Tap Level 2
Level
2 is devoted to the student who has accomplished the Level I skills
and is now ready to expand upon those skills. The student should be
capable of using and controlling the finer muscles of the body and
executing these within combos and routines. Emphasis is placed on
control of the feet to produce accenting, shading and clusters of
sounds. Students are introduced to progressive rhythm sequences and
patterns and usage of many varied tempos and musical arrangements.
Clarity and sound remain as a focal point.
Tap Level 3
Level 3 is devoted to the student who has achieved control, reliability
of execution, accenting and shading, clarity, direction and rhythmic
patterns. While different musical styles are used in previous levels,
Level III students will experiment with movements done acapella. Tap,
at this stage, becomes an all over body experience as heads, arms
and hands are introduced into many movements.
